The end of line may have been reached by BCS championship-winning Auburn football legend Cam Newton in the NFL — this at least according to Dean Jones of Cat Crave, FanSided’s Carolina Panthers-themed site.

Jones included Newton in a piece titled ‘3 key departures the Carolina Panthers missed most in 2022,’ citing the off-field leadership void in the Queen City and the lack of any viable option under center for the Panthers in 2022.

Quite simply, Newton’s public issues with former Carolina and current Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule made a return to the Panthers a non-possibility. But Jones wonders if that was the only shot Newton had left to be an NFL quarterback:

"“Newton came back for a brief period and couldn’t overcome difficult circumstances in 2021. The chances of Rhule bringing him back were non-existent – especially after the signal-caller saw right through his suspect methods and spoke publicly about not everyone buying in.”“This sentiment has been echoed by current and ex-players since Rhule was mercifully removed. That didn’t help Newton, who couldn’t find the right fit anywhere in 2022 and it remains to be seen whether or not he’ll ever see an NFL field again.”"

Options for Auburn football legend Cam Newton moving forward

Newton has always been like fellow Auburn football legend Bo Jackson and AU hoops’ legend Charles Barkley — returning to make appearances at big games but loving Auburn at a distance. The chances of him returning to coach the Tigers in any capacity like fellow gridiron great Carnell “Cadillac” Williams are essentially nonexistent.

With that in mind, Newton is either looking at returning to be a quarterback in the NFL once more — potentially as a backup should a team get hit with 49ers-like luck in the middle of the 2023 season — or moving on from the game entirely to get into the media/entertainment space.

Newton is a highly charismatic talker that has gotten into hot water over statements in the past. He’d fit right in with the ever-evolving post-athletic career podcast genre and would likely have many interesting things to say about the pre-NIL era of recruiting.
