Auburn football head coach Hugh Freeze had a terrifying message about the Tigers’ offense ahead of the program’s April 8 A-Day spring game — one which will have modified rules in which the defense will start with a set amount of points that the offense must top.

Freeze casted doubt on whether that scenario is possible while speaking to reporters on April 3. “I want to prepare the Auburn family that we’re going to do the best we can,” Freeze prefaced before saying, “We’re going to give them a game that I hope they can enjoy, but understand, we don’t know who we are offensively right now. We’re going to give them a game that I hope they can enjoy but understand, gosh, we don’t know who we are on offense. That’s probably the way I want it to be perceived by most”

Hugh Freeze has message to Auburn football fans: ‘Don’t expect too much’

Freeze had a simple message for Auburn football fans ahead of the first public outing for his Tigers: don’t expect too much.

“Don’t expect too much,” Freeze said. “Unrealistic expectations lead to frustrations. I just don’t want to show too much of what we might be really good at.”

Freeze has oftentimes been blunt about the quarterback room’s struggles, and the defensive front will be relying on a slew of transfers following the NFL departures of guys like Derick Hall, Colby Wooden, Owen Pappoe, and Eku Leota. Given the continued strength of the SEC — with an SEC West that is offering few openings above AU in the standings — Freeze isn’t trying to build up too much hype for what could be marginal improvement in 2023.

Hugh Freeze on the Auburn quarterback battle

Freeze commented on the quarterback battle, giving props to all three of the prospective competitors.

“Solid,” Freeze said of redshirt freshman Holden Geriner. “Solid. I think he really has a real chance to be a solid quarterback. But I think the other two (Robby Ashford and T.J. Finley) had good days, also. Better days. The interesting thing will be their response to the competition that’s been created.”

The quarterback battle will add Liberty flip Hank Brown during fall camp, though the transfer portal could also be an option if Freeze wants a capable veteran should no one in AU’s QB room prove to be such.
