UAB football’s official Twitter account answered Auburn football head coach Hugh Freeze’s challenge to UAB, Troy, and Alabama — which were the only schools mentioned, but he’d presumably open the door for South Alabama and Jacksonville State as well — to play intrastate scrimmages in the future instead of playing intrasquad exhibitions in the spring.

UAB head coach Trent Dilfer was receptive to the idea earlier in the day, seemingly calling out Alabama head coach Nick Saban in the process. “I was jumping out my skin like, yes!” Dilfer told reporters. “If (Saban) called tomorrow and asked if we wanted to get together to scrimmage, I’d get on the buses now and take the team to Tuscaloosa.”

Freeze announced his desire for intrastate spring scrimmages played between two different Alabama schools on April 3 while speaking to reporters — laying down the vision he had in mind and pitching the flat out genius idea. “I just think it would be great for the sport,” Freeze said. “I think it’d be awesome. For the life of me, I just don’t understand why we haven’t got to the point where we can pull that off and do something that’ll be helpful to some organization in each state. If every state did this, man, we could make an impact on some people that need it.”

Troy’s Jon Sumrall also endorses Auburn football HC Hugh Freeze’s idea

Troy head coach Jon Sumrall was receptive to Freeze’s future A-Day idea — though he later revealed the caveat he’d require.

“I wouldn’t have a problem with it,” Sumrall said. “I’d go play. Do you get caught up in preparing for the game more than just using spring as a developmental time for individuals — and for experimenting, adapting and growing within your systems on offense, defense and in the kicking game? Those are the only drawbacks I see.”

The world now awaits Saban’s opinion on the matter.
