Florida International transfer Denver Jones is visiting the Auburn basketball program on April 6, and should the Tigers land the New Market, Alabama native, Auburn Daily’s Lance Dawe believes he’d be a “significant improvement” for the AU backcourt.
“Auburn is currently lacking in guard play and Jones’ addition could be a significant improvement in that area,” Dawe wrote. “With only one signee so far, Aden Holloway, a four-star point guard and the No. 27 player in the 2023 recruiting class according to 247 Sports, it is expected to be a busy year for Auburn in the transfer portal.”
Dawe seemingly called out the five-foot-10 Wendell Green Jr. and six-foot-one Zep Jasper in his case for Auburn basketball adding Jones to the roster. “The Tigers are in need of portal production at shooting guard and on the wing,” Dawe wrote. “Jones would be an incredibly valuable edition to a roster that has recently suffered from poor to inconsistent guard play from shorter players.”
Bruce Pearl was recruiting for Auburn basketball once 2022-23 season ended
The night of Auburn’s disappointing 81-64 Round of 32 loss, head coach Bruce Pearl assured reporters on March 18 that he wouldn’t take long before soaking up what was, all told, a decently successful season by the program’s historical standards, and hitting the recruiting trail.
“I’m proud of them, but I also have a pretty high standard,” Pearl said. “And so, I’m grateful, and I want them to feel really good about the fact that they had a good year.… I’m proud of this team. But if you know me, I’m on to the next play. And I’ll be recruiting tonight.”
Perhaps Pearl knew that he’d have plenty of scholarship slots to fill with Wendell Green Jr. declaring for the NBA draft, Chance Westry and Yohan Traore taking to the transfer portal, and Zep Jasper departing after using his five years of eligibility since.
