Auburn football fans won’t appreciate which position group AL.com’s Tom Green deemed the “biggest work in progress” this spring — one that has been an issue since a certain AU legacy left for the Pacific Northwest.
“Auburn’s quarterback competition is going to carry into fall camp after Robby Ashford, T.J. Finley and Holden Geriner view for the starting job throughout the spring,” Green prefaced before saying, “There was good and bad from the trio this spring, and the position was clearly the biggest work in progress in Freeze’s estimation, as the quarterbacks required an adjusted approach from coaches mid-spring to help them better comprehend the RPO aspect of the offense.”
During the April 8 A-Day broadcast, Hugh Freeze was critical of T.J. Finley, and he has since seemingly endorsed Robby Ashford — and to a lesser extent Holden Geriner. Still, Freeze has declared that the transfer portal could be an option when the next cycle opens up.
“I think the transfer portal opens soon and we are open to any position that would help us improve our team as long as they fit within the culture, and that includes the quarterback room,” Freeze said (h/t On3). “I know people make a big deal out of that, but the bottom line is you’re constantly, I think, competition is helpful in those that handle it right. And those that don’t are probably not going to be the winners for you anyway.”
Paul Finebaum believes Auburn football will be ‘pretty active’ in transfer portal
Paul Finebaum doesn’t believe Freeze is truly confident in the QB room as things stand — and he’d predict that the Auburn football head coach would be “pretty active” in the upcoming transfer portal cycle.
“It didn’t change much, and the conclusions is still the same: I think Auburn needs a quarterback,” Finebaum said (h/t 247Sports). “I talked to Hugh Freeze on Friday before the game and you could tell he was saying the right things, but deep down, he knows quarterbacks and he knows he doesn’t have a quarterback on his roster that’s capable of getting Auburn out of the morass that it’s currently in and to the next level. So I think he’ll be pretty active in the portal.”
If Ashford can’t nail down the job soon, the transfer portal seems like a surefire means for Freeze and co. to find someone who can.
