Several Auburn football transfers in a key area of need for the Tigers, the offensive line, have “looked like home runs” during spring practice and the program’s April 8 A-Day spring game according to the Montgomery Advertiser’s Richard Silva.

Per Silva, Gunner Britton, Dillon Wade, and Avery Jones have all performed well as Hugh Freeze’s first offensive lineman from the portal.

“Britton, Jones, and Wade look like home runs,” Silva wrote. “They helped Auburn rush for 280 yards in the spring game, and Freeze said afterward that he was cautiously optimistic the offensive line could be ‘decent’ in 2023.”

Auburn football HC Hugh Freeze on cautious optimism about the offensive line

Freeze told reporters after the A-Day intrasquad exhibition that he sees the improvements along Auburn’s offensive line, but made sure to say that he was cautious about the unit’s expectations.

“I’m cautiously optimistic that we’re going to have a decent offensive line,” Freeze said (h/t Opelika-Auburn News). “In this league, you can have a decent one and still look bad at times because the defensive lines are so talented. But there’s no question in my mind we’ve made improvements from last year to this year. I thought today was just another step forward in that.”

Avery Jones: Offensive line ‘excited’ for 2023 Auburn football season

Jones, a graduate transfer out of East Carolina, revealed the Tigers offensive line’s collective excitement for the 2023 Auburn football season.

“I feel really excited about it,” Jones said. “The whole group feels excited about the season coming up. We all feel like we’re on the same page and stuff. We’re all making calls and working together. As an O-Line, you’ve got to be on the same page to be successful. So I think that’s what this whole spring was about, just getting comfortable with each other.”

If this group gets comfortable enough in Freeze and new offensive coordinator Philip Montgomery’s offense, Robby Ashford will take a step forward following a strong finish to the 2023 season, Holden Geriner will thrive with his first opportunity, or a transfer portal QB could be the one to elevate AU — because the offensive trenches have long held the Tigers back from reaching their ceiling.
