Georgia’s loss could turn into a major gain for Auburn football if redshirt reserve Brock Vandagriff takes to the transfer portal and decides to join his current school’s Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry counterpart.

Vandagriff hinted that he could head elsewhere following UGA’s annual G-Day scrimmage. “I’m not sure. I guess there’s some praying to do,” Vandagriff said (h/t UGA Wire). “But my plans, for now, are to just take it day by day.” Because of Vandagriff’s lack of a commitment to a future in Athens, Auburn Wire’s Taylor Jones called him “possibly the best option” under center for Auburn football in the transfer portal.

“Georgia’s quarterback race could have implications for Auburn, as the position is one of several that Hugh Freeze is pursuing as the second transfer portal window opens,” Jones prefaced before saying, “If Vandagriff were to enter, he could possibly be the best option at quarterback. During his recruitment, Auburn extended an offer to Vandagriff on May 9, 2018. At the time, Auburn was his second offer according to 247Sports. He would visit the Plains twice before committing to Oklahoma on June 19, 2020. He would later de-commit from the Sooners in favor to stay at home and play for Georgia.”

Analyst doubts Robby Ashford as the best option for Auburn football QB1

247Sports’ Chris Hummer made it sound as though Auburn is in dire need of another quarterback via the transfer portal, saying that Hugh Freeze may want more certainty than what returning QB1 Robby Ashford brings.

“(The Tigers) need a quarterback, and they’re looking to upgrade the position,” Hummer wrote. “Robby Ashford is still there. If you’re Hugh Freeze and you’re in year one, and you’re at a program that is not patient, you’d like more certainty than what Robbie Ashford potentially brings you. Robbie Ashford might be a pretty decent fit for what Hugh Freeze has done before. Auburn could certainly use a quarterback; where that comes from will be interesting.”

Could Vandagriff fit the bill? He has just three pass attempts and no completions in two seasons as Stetson Bennett’s backup. So the jury is out, though Vandagriff is just as experienced as Holden Geriner — making him someone whose potential is dictating his current standing more than his production.
