As the deadline for the close of the second transfer portal draws closer, a main priority for the Auburn football coaching staff is still finding a quarterback. While Robby Ashford and Holden Geriner continue to show flashes of potential, TJ Finley remains a question mark and the ability of either Ashford or Geriner to successfully run the new offense is uncertain.

In the first transfer portal window, the Tigers failed to bring in a transfer quarterback, and head coach Hugh Freeze has consistently said he is open to anyone who can come in and improve the team.

Earlier this week, former Cincinnati quarterback Ben Bryant entered the transfer portal after starting for the Bearcats during the 2022 season. 247 Sports’ Clint Brewster wondered on Twitter whether or not Auburn or Florida could be going after him and could be the reason why he entered the portal.

Now, former Utah State Aggies quarterback Bishop Davenport has entered the transfer portal, and he has ties to Auburn football’s new coaching staff. According to Auburn Daily’s Matthew Jacobs, the sophomore QB was previously recruited by current Auburn offensive coordinator Phillip Montgomery during his time as head coach at Tulsa.

The pair built a strong relationship throughout his recruitment, and Montgomery badly wanted Davenport at Tulsa, but he ultimately chose USU. He played in only three games for the Aggies in 2022 to preserve his redshirt status and completed 27 of 44 passes for 245 yards and two touchdowns.

While Davenport is not exactly the proven quarterback that Freeze and Co. seem to be looking for, he is someone that the offensive coordinator knows well, and he played pretty consistently in the games in which he competed. He could end up being an interesting candidate for the Tigers’ portal QB ahead of the 2023 season.
