CBS Sports’ Chris Trapasso explained what he feels Anthony Richardson does better than Cam Newton in a piece profiling 2023 NFL draft prospects and comparing them to past players. Trapasso believes Richardson is quicker to the punch when he sees an opening, calling the former Florida quarterback a “more explosive Cam Newton.”

“Richardson possesses the sheer power and similar cutting skill of Newton early in his career and also boasts a technically sound delivery, just like Newton had,” Trapasso wrote. “But where Newton would take a second to kick it into top gear, Richardson erupts when he sees an opening and will run away from some defensive backs in the NFL. He absolutely needs to sharpen his accuracy overall, yet his pocket presence provided flashes of brilliance at Florida.”

Richardson was projected to be selected No. 20 by the Seattle Seahawks in NFL.com writer Daniel Jeremiah’s April 26 2023 NFL mock draft.

Cam Newton is not an ‘awesome comparison’ for Anthony Richardson

Trapasso wasn’t convinced Newton, or anyone else for that matter, is a true comparison to Richardson — though Josh Allen also was someone worthy of consideration according to the CBS Sports writer.

“In actuality, there’s no awesome comparison for Richardson,” Trapasso wrote. “He is truly one of a kind. In the history of football, we have never seen a quarterback, at his size, with his explosiveness, long speed, running talent and bazooka arm. We just haven’t. I nearly went with a Josh Allen comparison, but Allen was — believe it or not — more polished and aggressive as a pocket passer entering the NFL in 2018 and is a little bigger than Richardson with longer strides as a runner.”

FS1 host Emmanuel Acho also doesn’t believe there’s a comparison.

The comparisons to the former Heisman winner and 2015 NFL MVP may do more harm to Richardson’s chance of receiving proper pro expectations than good.
