Auburn football landed its third defender from the transfer portal during the 2023 spring cycle on Saturday, May 20 with the commitment of Stephen Sings V — a former Liberty EDGE rusher with ties to Tigers head coach Hugh Freeze.
Sings amassed 48 tackles and seven sacks during his time in Lynchburg, which wasn’t his original plan. The Julius L. Chambers High School product had originally committed to play at Virginia Tech before he de-comitted and joined Freeze’s Flames less than two hours east of Blacksburg.
Elijah McAllister and Keldric Faulk represent the main obstacles in Sings’ path to playing time under Freeze in his first season. Sings has no prior experience with Ron Roberts’ defensive schemes even though he does have familiarity with Freeze.
Auburn football commitment Stephen Sings: It’s ‘pretty much the same scheme’
As previously mentioned, Sings has never played for a Roberts-coached defense in his collegiate career. But, as he pointed out via Rivals, there is familiarity with the kinds of concepts Roberts utilizes.
“I feel like I’m at home pretty much,” Sings said on Auburn. “It’s a little bit different, it’s bigger than Liberty, but it’s fun. They believe in me and they know what I’m gonna come and do. I’m gonna come and compete, I’m gonna come and work. I’m not gonna play games. It’s pretty much the same scheme. I talked to Coach Roberts, pretty much the same. It’s nothing different from Liberty, so I’m gonna adjust pretty well.”
Evidently, Sings is confident in his ability to adjust to AU’s new schemes, though it should be pointed out that adjusting to the intensity of an SEC matchup on a fall Saturday in the South will be a different beast entirely.
Luckily, Sings has the right attitude about coming to the Plains.
“I came to work,” Sings said.
