Auburn football staff working to establish Central pipeline to the Plains
While Auburn football head coach Hugh Freeze has been staying plenty busy with the NCAA transfer portal and getting the 2023 team ready for the season, he has also said that he knows his future success on the Plains will hinge upon the recruiting classes of 2024 and 2025.
For the past several years, the Tigers have struggled to connect with top programs around the state and have had a hard time locking down top Alabama recruits. Hugh Freeze and his new staff are working hard to change that.
One of the top-priority targets for the Tigers in the recruiting class of 2024 is 5-star wide receiver Cam Coleman, who attends Central High School in Phenix City, which is roughly 45 minutes away from the Plains. He received an immediate offer from new Auburn football wide receivers coach Marcus Davis, and the pair have built a strong relationship through frequent communication and visits in that time. Coleman noted that it’s important to him that he feels like a factor for Davis, and he sees how important he is to the Tigers’ class of 2024.
According to Coleman, it’s clear that the new coaching staff is working to build a pipeline from Central to the Plains after not signing a recruit from the school since 2016, per Auburn Rivals:
"“They’re definitely building it,” Coleman said. “We’re all coming up here at the same time. Really building that brotherhood with our position coaches and really ever since that new coaching staff (arrived).”"
The Tigers are going after Coleman and 3-star safety Rydarrius Morgan in the class of 2024, but have already gotten a head start on the class of 2025 with wide receiver Daylyn Upshaw and offensive lineman Mal Waldrep, both of whom visited the Plains last week.
Hopefully the consistent visits and communications with Central High School will pay off in big ways for Hugh Freeze and the rest of his new coaching staff.
