JUCO DB opens up on his Auburn football commitment
Although the recruiting focus has turned mostly to the class of 2024, Auburn football head coach Hugh Freeze does not seem finished putting together the team for his first season on the Plains.
Over the weekend the Auburn football program added another member to the roster ahead of the 2023 season. Junior college defensive back Chancellor “Champ” Anthony became a Tiger following his official visit this weekend.
Anthony, a Texas native, played high school ball in his home state before beginning his college career at Tyler Junior College. As a freshman, Anthony racked up 14 total tackles and an interception.
According to Auburn Rivals, Anthony was hosted by Keionte Scott during his visit to campus, and the two players share a connection—they were both coached by Tanner Jacobsen, who was an assistant coach at Snow College, Scott’s prior school, before becoming head coach at Tyler College.
Of course, Scott is a great example of a junior college athlete that has excelled with Auburn football, and now Anthony will hopefully follow in his footsteps. Rivals also reports that Anthony’s choice to become an Auburn Tiger was an easy one for the defensive back:
"“It was the coaches and the environment,” Anthony said. “You can’t beat playing in the SEC. Every kid dreams of playing in the SEC and going from JUCO to the SEC, it’s not heard of, it’s not regular. I had to take this opportunity to play in the SEC and play along with some great coaches.”"
Champ Anthony will have three years of eligibility after his move to the Plains, and he will likely see playing time at nickel, according to AL.com. Anthony chose Auburn football over several schools including BYU, North Dakota State, and Old Dominion.
