Auburn roster has ‘full complement’ of scholarships barring transfer portal departure
The 2023-24 Auburn basketball roster now has a “full complement” of scholarships — barring the transfer portal departures of any player between now and November — with the addition of JUCO transfer Addarin Scott and the likely scholarship offer to longtime fan-favorite walk-on Lior Berman according to AL.com’s Creg Stephenson.
“Auburn technically has one scholarship remaining for next season, though it is believed walk-on Lior Berman will be placed on scholarship,” Stephenson prefaced before saying, “That would give the Tigers a full complement of 13 scholarships for 2023-24, barring any further departures.”
While it seemed as though the Tigers were going to be losing the likes of Johni Broome and Jaylin Williams to the NBA, Bruce Pearl got many of his key frontcourt contributors, Dylan Cardwell included but Stretch Akingbola excluded, back for the 2023-24 season. Wendell Green Jr., Allen Flanigan, and Chance Westry highlight the key NBA/transfer portal losses this offseason.
Auburn basketball bringing on hard workers for the 2023-24 season
One thing that is clear about the Auburn basketball roster for this upcoming season is that Pearl is rewarding those who have never given up on their basketball dreams despite having played at smaller programs. Scott, fellow JUCO transfer Chad Baker-Mazara out of Northwest Florida State, DII Huntsville transfer Chaney Johnson, and FIU transfer Denver Jones are all stepping into this brightest spotlight of their careers after grinding for recognition at the lower levels of the sport.
That’s not to say that the team isn’t bringing in talent with a 5-star pedigree, though. Aden Holloway is the No. 4 point guard in the country for the 2023 class and the No. 2 overall recruit out of California. K.D. Johnson was a 4-star for Georgia’s 2020 class and Auburn’s 2021 transfer class.
Still, the under-the-radar, started-from-the-bottom-now-they’re-here JUCO/transfer commits of Pearl’s 2023 recruiting class will define the Tigers’ whole-greater-than-the-sum-of-its-parts approach to the 2023-24 season.
