Former Auburn football star Nick Marshall made a game-winning play for the Saskatchewan Roughriders on July 6 against the Edmonton Elks with an interception of Taylor Cornelius in the final minute of a 12-11 victory for the Tigers quarterback-turned-pro defensive back’s CFL squad.

As Marshall pointed out, the Roughriders had practiced defending the two-minute hurry-up offense all week during practice.

“That’s something we worked this week in practice — these two-minute situations,” Marshall said following the win (h/t AL.com). Saskatchewan’s coach Craig Dickenson lauded the former Auburn football BCS Championship runner-up signal-caller for his ability to “finish games.”

“He’s got nice ball skills,” Dickenson prefaced before saying, “Nick can finish a game for you. He’s a dangerous DB because if the ball’s close to him, he can catch it. …It was a good play by him to finish the game.”

What former Auburn football star Nick Marshall said prior to Elks matchup

Marshall went into Saskatchewan’s matchup against Edmonton with the right mindset, having already done what he needed to do off the field to make the right play when it counted on the field. He had told the Regina Leader-Post he was merely worrying about his own team executing what they needed to; not so much the Elks.

“We’ve just got to go in and worry about us and not too much worry about them,” Marshall prefaced before saying, “Right now, they’re reaching for a win, so I believe they’re going to come in and give us everything they’ve got. We’ve just got to worry about us.”

Marshall also had a game-winning interception on June 24 during a 29-26 overtime over the Calgary Stampeders. Following a 2021 CFL West Division All-Star nomination, Marshall is continuing to have a stellar second act on the gridiron in the Great White North long after a legendary 2013 season on the Plains.
