Former Auburn football offensive lineman and current SEC Network analyst Cole Cubelic believes the Coach O rumors tying the 2019/20 College Football Playoff National Championship head coach at LSU to the current vacant Northwestern job are “all kinds of wrong” — tweeting out the bearish take on Ed Orgeron’s chances of coaching the Wildcats following Pat Fitzgerald’s firing.

The Orgeron-Northwestern rumors originated from a report from Inside NU’s Bradley Locker on July 12.

“For now, former defensive coordinator David Braun is acting as the team’s head coach, with some reports sharing that Braun may eventually be named the interim leader for the 2023 season,” Locker wrote. “Most expectation is that NU will utilize an interim head coach for the year ahead, but the possibility exists of making an outside hire, especially of a veteran coach. One such name on that list might include former LSU coach Ed Orgeron.”

Auburn football alumni Cole Cubelic could’ve just been stating a fact

Maybe it wasn’t Cubelic thinking that the Bayou-born Orgeron being in the Chicago metro would be a mess but in fact, just the former Auburn football offensive lineman stating a stone-cold fact. The Athletic’s Bruce Feldman dispelled the Orgeron rumor.

“Spoke to Ed Orgeron,” Feldman prefaced before saying, “There is no truth to the report that he has any interest in the Northwestern coaching job nor has he heard from anyone at Northwestern.”

Orgeron had a less-than-stellar PR performance in his final few seasons at LSU following the Joe Burrow-led championship run. It doesn’t seem like he’d make a return as an emergency fill-in at one of the Big Ten’s weakest programs in the last two years. The Northwestern brand is a funky fit with Coach O, to say the least.

This mid-July rumor was fun while it lasted, but it was always a long shot.
