Malcolm Simmons commitment illustrates Auburn’s recruiting pivot, says analyst
Auburn football landing Benjamin Russell wideout Malcolm Simmons shows the recruiting pivot the program has undergone since Hugh Freeze inherited Bryan Harsin’s Tigers says AL.com’s Ainslie Lee.
“When Bryan Harsin was at the helm of the Auburn football program, local high school football coaches never felt like a priority in terms of recruiting,” Lee prefaced before saying, “Auburn-area prospects were often overlooked by their hometown team. Now, with Hugh Freeze piloting the Tigers, that’s changed. Given his previous experience in the SEC, Freeze understands the importance of winning the recruiting battles in his backyard before venturing out around the country. As such, earning the commitment of Alexander City athlete Malcolm Simmons was a priority for Auburn during its Big Cat Weekend.”
The Alexander City product cited the feeling of family with the Auburn football coaching staff, specifically, wide receivers coach Marcus Davis and Freeze, as to why he made the decision to join AU’s 2024 class.
“Coaches, they make me feel like family and trust the process,” Simmons said (h/t Auburnundercover). “Coach Freeze and Coach Davis, they told me from Day 1 just trust the process. It took a big role in my recruitment. Once they said that I already knew what school I wanted to be at.”
Auburn football WR recruit looking forward to playing with Walker White
Little Rock Christian Academy quarterback and 2024 Auburn football recruit Walker White has Simmons excited about suiting up on the Plains in a little over a year’s time.
“Seeing the quarterback that I practiced with and will have games with, he’s a good quarterback and looking forward to playing in 2024 with him,” Simmons said.
Simmons and fellow 2024 wideout commit Bryce Cain caught passes from White during an Auburn camp in June. Now, they will all be repping the orange and blue, and more wideout recruits could be committing soon during Big Cat Weekend.
