SMU

Three times from 1940 to 1968, Auburn football tried, but failed, to defeat Southern Methodist; one of those games took place on the Plains, one in Birmingham, and the initial meeting in Dallas. Two of those contests were two-score losses from the Tigers. While the two schools duked it out for the 2023 NCEA Championship in equestrian, there’s not been any meeting on the football field for nearly half a century.

AU will soon have two schools from Texas in the SEC, so the odds aren’t particularly high the Tigers’ brain trust will be rushing to get the Mustangs on the schedule in the coming years. Given SMU’s mediocrity in the College Football Playoff era outside of the 2019 season, it’s not likely these two teams square off in the postseason, though perhaps a Birmingham Bowl matchup could be in the cards.

Although given Hugh Freeze’s recruiting success since taking over as head coach, Birmingham Bowls may just be a thing of the past.
