We are days away from the 2023 college football season, and pre-season polls, award watchlists, and opinions are being released left and right. Many Auburn football players have been receiving award hype during the preseason, but there are question marks surrounding the team’s future success.

While many adjustments and improvements have been made since the Tigers traded Bryan Harsin for Head Coach Hugh Freeze, there are still the routine adjustments and improvements from neighboring powerhouses Alabama and Georgia to consider. The Tigers have made up ground, but other SEC programs have not been stagnant.

This week, the first AP Poll of the 2023 season was released, including the top 25 teams and those programs that received votes. The top four teams should not come as a surprise: Georgia, Michigan, Ohio State, and Alabama, in that order.

Overall, four SEC teams made the cut in addition to Georgia and Alabama: LSU (5), Tennessee (12), Ole Miss (22), and Texas A&M (23). The list also contains five Big Ten programs, five Pac-12 programs, four Big 12 teams, three Atlantic Coast teams, one American Athletic team, and one independent team. The complete list is as follows:

  1. Georgia
  2. Michigan
  3. Ohio State
  4. Alabama
  5. LSU
  6. USC
  7. Penn State
  8. Florida State
  9. Clemson
  10. Washington
  11. Texas
  12. Tennessee
  13. Notre Dame
  14. Utah
  15. Oregon
  16. Kansas State
  17. TCU
  18. Oregon State
  19. Wisconsin
  20. Oklahoma
  21. North Carolina
  22. Ole Miss
  23. Texas A&M
  24. Tulane
  25. Iowa

Other teams that got earned votes include Texas Tech (101), South Carolina (73), UCLA (66), UTSA (64), Arkansas (22), Boise St. (17), Pittsburgh (16), Kentucky (14), Louisville (10), Troy (10), Kansas (10), Auburn (7), Minnesota (6), Toledo (4), Duke (4), Mississippi St. (4), Florida (4), Illinois (3), Baylor (3), Coastal Carolina (3), South Alabama (1), NC State (1), James Madison (1), and Liberty (1).

Though Auburn football did not make it into the Week 1 Top 25, they still received seven votes, and there is plenty of time for the Tigers to work their way in. Many out there are still skeptical of Auburn football, which is understandable, but there is a high ceiling for the Tigers in their first year under Hugh Freeze.
