Auburn football running back Damari Alston is set to have a locker-room leadership role that could make his on-field role pale in comparison according to AL.com’s Ainslie Lee — who assured that there would be an increased role for the Woodward Academy product.
“In Saturday’s scrimmage at Jordan-Hare Stadium — the first of the fall for the Tigers — Alston was credited with ripping off a long touchdown rush,” Lee wrote. “Alston finished without a scoring rush during his freshman season. While Alston’s on-field role is sure to increase this coming fall, from the sounds of it, it pales in comparison to what his leadership role might be in the running back room.” Carnell “Cadillac” Williams added that Alston is going to serve in a more vocal role than the Tigers running back great and current running backs coach had during the Tommy Tuberville era.
“Damari, the thing he does a really good job of — it’s just head over heels for me — is he has a way of not only leading by example, but he also has that voice,” Williams said. “Damari is the guy that leads by example but can capture guys — the way he talks to them, the way he brings in guys.”
Cadillac Williams believes Auburn football freshman can be ‘household name’
Williams, a former star in Gadsden during his high school days, can see what incoming Montgomery Catholic 4-star Jeremiah Cobb is going through as an in-state star making his way to the Plains.
“I can definitely remember coming in, being from this state, being a big-name back, and trying to find my way,” Williams said. He’d go on to predict that Cobb would become a household name for Auburn.
“I mean, his vision, quickness, explosiveness… I’m excited for this guy’s future,” Williams said. “I honestly think he will be one of those household names.”
