Auburn vs Texas A&M will be the first SEC game of the Hugh Freeze era, and the first three weeks of the new regime’s tenure running the Tigers has led AU to be a single-digit underdog in their second road game of the season.

Week 4 will be the first time during the 2023 campaign in which Auburn will be an underdog; having gone into California Memorial Stadium in Berkeley Week 2 as a near-touchdown favorite against the Golden Bears.

Meanwhile, Texas A&M has only ever been the favorite in their matchups in 2023. However, the Aggies are 2-1 after getting blown out by Miami 48-33 in Week two at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens.

Will the underdog do what its history does and cause a serious coaching conundrum in College Station? Or will Jimbo Fisher’s place on the hot seat be spared another week with an Aggies win over an underdog Auburn Tigers team?

Auburn vs Texas A&M Key Players to Watch

Auburn

Jarquez Hunter: Through three games, transfer quarterback Payton Thorne is leading Auburn in rushing yards and yards per carry. Robby Ashford leads the team in rushing touchdowns. That’s not how things were supposed to look for a running back room with pie-in-the-sky projections.

Jarquez Hunter has been predicted to re-take that rushing lead from Thorne, and getting there could include a massive game against an Aggies run defense that gave up five yards per carry to Miami’s top rusher in Week 2.

Eugene Asante: Running away with the Tigers’ tackle lead in 2023 is linebacker Eugene Asante, who spent the 2022 season on the scout team — something that sparked controversy with the Harsin family on social media.

Drama aside, Asante is getting the job done on the field and will be crucial in making Aggies quarterback Conner Weigman uncomfortable in Week 4.

Texas A&M

Conner Weigman: Speaking of, this week to Tiger fans at least, the devil, Weigman registers as a critical threat to an Auburn passing defense that passed the Michael Hiers test against Samford with flying colors.

Weigman is a different caliber of talent, with a 5-star pedigree and experience playing in the talent-rich Houston metro area during his vaunted high school career. Auburn could be his coming out party to a national audience as A&M looks to rebound from the Miami loss.

Noah Thomas: Weigman needs his weapons, and wide receiver Noah Thomas is his red zone threat; having already connected for four touchdowns through the first three weeks of the 2023 season.

Thomas had injury worries heading into this matchup but has been ruled good to go. The wideout being at or near full strength could go a long way in determining the potency of Texas A&M’s passing attack.

Auburn vs Texas A&M Prediction and Pick

Freeze has tried to temper expectations against A&M this week, so perhaps the worries from the top of the chain are worth sending down to the fanbase; who may be biting off more than they could chew expecting an undefeated Auburn welcoming No. 1 Georgia to Jordan-Hare Stadium in Week 5.

There could be serious growing pains for the Plains at Kyle Field on Saturday.

Prediction: Texas A&M -7.5
