Robert Griffin III made a wild reference to Jarquez Hunter’s sensitive offseason situation during the September 23 Week 4 broadcast of Texas A&M hosting Auburn football in College Station; a situation that had the running back suspended for fall camp and into Week 2 of the season.

After Hunter ripped off a run that gave the Tigers a first down, Griffin said that the RB was “getting butt naked in the secondary,” a reference to the sexual nature of Hunter’s offseason controversy. The University’s press release in May revealed that the matter was being looked into.

“We are aware of the situation and take this matter very seriously,” Auburn said in a statement (h/t New York Post). “The appropriate offices are conducting a thorough review. Indefinite suspensions have been issued for violation of applicable Auburn Athletics department policy. No further comment will be provided at this time.”

Most Tiger fans would agree that Griffin’s Hunter comment was far out of bounds considering the severity of the situation involved. But his commentary was ripped far beyond just the insensitive jab at Hunter’s offseason situation.

Constantly calling AU the “War Eagles” is obnoxious enough, but saying that it “would suck” if Edgerrin Cooper’s fumble recovery scoop-and-score was brought back by the referees, and it was, is borderline unforgivable from a national commentator that should be keeping it neutral.

Auburn entered Week 4’s matchup against Texas A&M as a one-score underdog. The Tigers trailed 6-0 after the first quarter.
