The Auburn football quarterback room was referred to as a disaster by AthlonSports’ Kevin Borba — who called AU such in an assessment of Wazzu transfer Cameron Ward’s landing spots, while also calling the Tigers a “riskier” option via the portal.
“Auburn’s quarterback situation was a disaster this season, and Hugh Freeze will likely be all-in on a handful of transfer quarterbacks just to make sure he doesn’t have to deal with that again,” Borba wrote. “Heading to Auburn compared to some of the other options may be a bit riskier, but Ward doesn’t seem to shy away from a challenge as he bet himself once already.”
Of note, the idea of Ward on the Plains was not written off; instead propped up as a potential challenge for anyone looking for one in their collegiate careers. Certainly, Alabama flip Perry Thompson, recent Texas A&M flip Cameron Coleman, and Georgia flip Demarcus Riddick felt like challenging themselves, so Ward wouldn’t be the only one who’d risk it for the biscuit in Auburn.
Auburn football QB Payton Thorne failed to move the needle to national analysts
Those who covered Auburn’s four-game losing streak to open up SEC play know how much better Payton Thorne looked once the schedule reached the Mississippi State/Vanderbilt/Arkansas portion of it.
But nationally, many are coming away with the same opinion of the Tigers that they likely had coming into the year. And Thorne’s futility against the likes of Texas A&M, LSU, and Ole Miss are obvious reasons why.
Juxtaposed against the near-Heisman campaign Bo Nix had at Oregon, Hugh Freeze forcing an unpopular two-man system that never gave Robby Ashford a true chance was a disastrous look for Auburn’s offense, and thus, the plot is lost to national analysts.
It’s not a shock to hear AU’s QB room referred to as a disaster all things considered.
