Auburn football flip target LJ McCray, currently committed to Florida, sees the vision of how things could go on the Plains — specifically, Keldric Faulk’s, of whom the Mainland (Florida) star name-dropped during his December 9 AU visit.

“They’re still trying to get me here and that I could be a guy they could develop and do a lot of things with,” McCray said (h/t Rivals). “You just look at a guy like Keldric (Faulk) and see what he has done. Watching him from high school and seeing the things he has done. That is pretty cool as well.”

McCray was told by Hugh Freeze’s staff that he would be recruited hard until the end, specifically by Tigers DL coach Jeremy Garrett.

“[Auburn] told me from the get-go, right before I committed, that they were going to recruit me until the end, so just coming up and chilling,” McCray said of the visit. “I feel like I am one of the first guys he has been recruiting since he got the job at Auburn. He has been recruiting me for two-three years now. I feel like the relationship is there for sure.”

Freeze might not have the flip success with McCray that he’s had with Cameron Coleman most recently, and Perry Thompson and Demarcus Riddick before that.

McCray held firm in his Florida commitment. Or at least he spoke of holding firm between now and the start of the 2024 season.

“Just really, I committed for a reason, I took a long time to commit for a reason, so it would take a lot for me to flip or anything of that nature,” McCray said. “We just won state Thursday so just kind of decompress and self-reflect for the next few weeks.”

After that decompression, it sounds as though Garrett will still be on McCray’s case. Let’s see if Florida can hold it together this offseason — with a slew of recruits having already bolted for the transfer portal — long enough to get McCray’s signed NLI.
