Hugh Freeze’s Auburn football program is a longshot to land Coastal Carolina transfer portal entry Grayson McCall — who, as G5 Football Daily’s Joe Londergan relays, is a heavy favorite to land with NC State.
This comes as a surprise after Gus Malzahn’s UCF made a strong push for the former Chanticleer in early December. What’s more surprising are AU’s 11th-best odds to land him, behind the likes of G5 James Madison and San Diego State.
At almost no point this offseason besides the days immediately following the Coastal Carolina QB’s announcement he was transferring has McCall felt like a possibility for the Plains; a somewhat strange scenario considering he was expected to join the Tigers in 2022 after announcing, but before rescinding, his first portal entry. Whatever academic issue derailed his near-Auburn transfer in 2022 may not have been resolved. Or Freeze doesn’t want to deal with it all again.
Cameron Ward the best Auburn football possibility, but he may fall to Miami’s NIL promises
Many Tiger fans want Cameron Ward leading the quarterback room in 2024 considering the success of QBs named Cam in East Central Alabama in the past and how spectacular the former Incarnate Word and Wazzu signal-caller has been at every level. Unfortunately, a big-money school that’s been known to make gaudy NIL promises — promises that have not always been met –, Miami, has Ward on campus on December 12.
The U will surely make a push for the ex-Cougar, and it may just work. Hopefully, Ward heeds Joel Klatt’s wisdom…
“This is not a knock, but if he goes to Miami? I don’t see him being in the Heisman race,” Klatt said (h/t AthlonSports). “I don’t see Miami having the type of team season that it would require for him to go do that.”
Quarterbacks named Cam have won the Heisman Trophy while playing at Auburn. Ward Eagle to that.
