It only took one day of spring practice for a video to appear of Auburn quarterback Byrum Brown’s throwing motion for it to be criticized.
Wait, let’s back up a second. It only took 10 seconds – and one throw – from Byrum Brown on the first day of Auburn’s spring practice for it to be videotaped, go viral, and, for some reason, start drawing criticism.
That’s the age we live in now, when a sidearm throw from a player who threw for 3,158 yards and 28 touchdowns last season is automatically called weird, and people start to wonder if Auburn is in trouble again at the quarterback position.
College Transfer Portal’s Twitter account immediately started the widespread panic, posting:
“NEW: Auburn QB Byrum Brown is getting criticism for his throwing motion.
Should Auburn fans be worried?…”
Alex Golesh responds to silly criticism of quarterback
Alex Golesh, Auburn’s new head coach, took to the same social media site on Thursday to shut down all the clutching of the pearls by armchair quarterbacks everywhere.

If anyone outside of Brown himself knows the quarterback’s throwing motion and when and when not to be concerned, it is Golesh. The 41-year-old coach coached Brown for the last three years at USF and, when taking the Auburn job this offseason, was so confident in Brown’s ability to get the job done in the SEC that he made the quarterback one of his top priorities in the transfer portal.
But when it is the offseason, fans (and Twitter accounts) are looking for anything and everything to cause controversy, and it took just a 10-second clip of Brown throwing one pass for many to do that.
Let’s see what happens when Brown lights it up for the Tigers this season. I’m sure those accounts will be the first in line to apologize.
