Gus Malzahn will forever be a legend in Auburn after leading the Tigers to great times, including serving as offensive coordinator during the 2010 national championship season and leading Nick Marshall and company to the SEC title and to seconds in the national championship in 2013, in his first season as head coach.
Now retired, Malzahn has returned to the Plains to spend time in both Auburn and Lake Martin, but that doesn’t mean he won’t be around the football facility. On Tuesday, he attended the Tigers’ scrimmage in Jordan-Hare Stadium and was a welcome sight to new head coach Alex Golesh.
Gus Malzahn a welcome sight back in Auburn's facility
“That was his first one of spring,” the head coach said. “I've been trying to get him here. He's moving back and will be a huge resource for me, and super grateful for him and Kristi and the support that they've shown myself and Lex, which has been awesome. So super grateful to have a wealth of knowledge here and a guy that cares about Auburn so dearly.”
Golesh should want to follow in Malzahn’s footsteps, as his last season in charge at Auburn (2020) was the last time the Tigers finished with a winning record. He had some massive victories during his time, including the Miracle at Jordan-Hare and Kick Six, while also taking down No. 1 Georgia and No. 1 Alabama in the matter of three weeks.
But, for Golesh, the two started out as rivals first at opposing schools in the Sunshine State.
“I really met him when he was at UCF, and I was at USF, and inevitably run into each other in recruiting and clinics and all that,” Golesh said. “USF, UCF, you're supposed to hate each other. So we wouldn't talk in public or anything, but I've always respected.”
