There are a number of question marks for the Auburn football team heading into fall camp, but if there's one thing that's certain it's that the Tigers are planning to "run the piss out of the ball" this fall.
Head Coach Alex Golesh's main priority in his first year on the Plains is to build an identity for his team, particularly on the offense, and that identity is rooted in the Tigers' ability to run the ball. Golesh and his staff brought in three running back transfers during the offseason to back up returning star Jeremiah Cobb alongside young contributor Omar Mabson.
Golesh was asked earlier this week about how many running backs he wanted to play this season, and he said in a perfect world the staff would have three and a half ready to go into any given game due to the rough nature of the position. He also revealed one of the biggest position battles in this year's fall camp.
"That competition is gonna to be fascinating in camp," Golesh said of the running backs, per Auburn 247. "Like as we went through the depth yesterday, there's – like I'll give Omar a lot of credit. Omar Mabson's a young guy that played a little bit as a freshman, really as a 17- year-old freshman, a kid that reclassed.
"I have to keep reminding myself that he just turned 18 years old, which is crazy. You talk about a guy that this place means something to, and he shows up and works that way every day. Like that's a guy that we came into spring and really didn't know much about, other than the little bit of film you saw from a year ago, and like he doesn't say a whole lot, but he's on a mission to win a job, and he has pushed others in that room to either get on his level or they're gonna struggle. So there's a guy that I don't know that I knew a ton going in, and to his credit, he just keeps showing us why he should play."
Mabson will face tough competition for the RB2 spot with transfers Bryson Washington, Tae Meadows and Nykahi Davenport, each of whom were starters at their previous school but none of whom have SEC experience. Despite his young age, it's clear that Mabson is emerging as a leader in the running backs room and could have the chance to really break out this season if he continues to perform well in fall camp.
