It's safe to say that the Auburn Tigers football team has had an offense problem for the past few years. Whether it's issues with the quarterback or the surrounding cast, the Tigers have struggled to be a dynamic, play-making team that scores points and wins games.
New head coach Alex Golesh is out to fix that problem, though, by revamping the Tigers' offense with a fast-paced playing style.
“We’re going to play really fast at times. The ball is going to get out quick. But formationally we’ve evolved. What we’ve run schematically in the run game and the pass game has evolved, and that’s been year to year,” Golesh added, per AL.com. “And I think really good play callers, really good guys that can scheme, will evolve and change based on what you have, and then what you’re expecting, because the guys, we’re playing against are also going to be different here.”
Golesh brought in his offensive coordinator, Joel Gordon, from USF, along with former USF starting quarterback Byrum Brown to run the offense. And speaking of running, Golesh believes that is where everything starts, and the return of Jeremiah Cobb plus several major additions to the RB room should make that philosophy a reality.
“The spring is going to be huge for us to know what the heck are we actually good at? What are we not good at? And then build an offense around the personnel,” Golesh said. “What’s made our offense as good as it has been is that we’ve adjusted year to year. And anybody that understands football has watched us from the Iowa State to the UCF to the Tennessee to the South Florida, like, we look different, the core foundation has been the same. We’re going to run the piss out of the ball.”
The Tigers begin spring practice on March 17.
