On Memorial Day, Alex Golesh nabbed an Auburn Tigers recruit who is as feel-good a get for the 2027 high school class as it gets. Auburn landed the commitment of lifelong Gadsden native Rance Brown, a 3-star tackle who is playing for Brentwood Academy in Nashville during his senior season.
Brown described in so many words why he is the exact type of recruit the Tigers need to be pursuing in the state of Alabama. Per Brown, “Running out of the tunnel at the school I dreamed and worked for to play for means so much to me ... Getting to represent my home state with my last name is every kid’s dream ... Auburn feels like home, but is also the most energetic and electric atmosphere in the SEC every Saturday ... Obviously, that’s what everyone says, but Auburn is unlike any place on Earth."
Going beyond the home-state angle, Golesh's coaching staff clearly did the work to not only make Brown feel like a priority during the recruiting process but to get Brown to buy into the long-term vision.
“It came down to how I believe that with coach Hudanick’s view on my game along with the other assistant offensive line coaches, will help me achieve my dreams. Then, how the campus is beautiful, which will help me thrive mentally and the degree is a big deal, which will set me up for life," Brown said.
Alex Golesh is addressing Auburn's generational offensive line issues
Golesh is recruiting like a man who recognizes Auburn football's perennial pitfall and wants to fix it, not only to endear himself to the fanbase but to actually have the Tigers competing in the SEC beyond avoiding the bottom of the conference.
Brown is the second offensive tackle commit in the past week. Golesh nabbed 4-star Appoquinimink Jaguars (Delaware) swing tackle Layton von Brandt over the Notre Dame Fighting Irish.
Brown said of Golesh's coaching staff that, “This is their dream job, so they are going to work their tails off to stay there,” and he couldn't be more right. Golesh is recruiting like someone who is already on the hot seat. That's always a safe hedge on the Plains, where expectations haven't been met by the past two coaches, and bridges were quickly burned by those two.
Several key statistical categories, like yards before contact and quarterback sack percentage, have painted a bleak picture over the past several seasons. 2022 and 2025 were particularly brutal years, but it's not as though Payton Thorne had a chance in 2023 and 2024, or Bo Nix had much of a chance in 2021. Guard play has been serviceable, if even actively good at times, and the run has benefited, but tackle play has been dreadful. Nabbing two from the 2027 class is an incredible step for Golesh and Co. Hopefully, Michigan State Spartans transfer Stanton Ramil and James Madison Dukes transfer Jo Simmons could bridge the gap this coming year.
We'll see what more Golesh does to strengthen the trenches, but he's off to a good start on his 2027 group.
Simply put, he gets it. And he's proving that on the recruiting trail.
