Alex Golesh proves he understands Auburn's most important 'hate'

Though it may have been slightly less exciting for the past several years due to Auburn football's coaching blunders, there is nothing more intense than the Iron Bowl Rivalry between Auburn and Alabama fans.

There have been countless documentaries created, crimes committed and spars thrown back and forth between fans across all sports when it comes to the Tigers facing off against the Crimson Tide. Even though former head coach Hugh Freeze got infamously "close" to beating Alabama, among other teams, the Tigers are certainly in a winning drought when it comes to the Iron Bowl.

Alabama has won the Iron Bowl for six years in a row, and the last time Auburn won was at home in Jordan-Hare Stadium in 2019. The last time the Tigers won in Bryant-Denny was the famous 'Cam-back" all the way back in 2010. Auburn won the Iron Bowl at home in 2013, 2017 and 2019 under Gus Malzahn, but neither Bryan Harsin or Hugh Freeze were able to lead an Auburn team to victory over the Crimson Tide.

Despite the rough patch for Auburn football, the rivalry is still intense, and the Tigers' new head coach Alex Golesh has proven he understands just how big of a deal the Iron Bowl is.

"(The Iron Bowl rivalry) is real. I've been to a lot of events, a lot of fundraisers, a lot of alumni deals, and every single message is the same," Alex Golesh said during an appearance on See Ball Get Ball with David Pollack. "It's like: 'War Eagle, beat them cats.' 'War Eagle, we hate those guys.' And they're not joking. (Auburn fans) grow up with a legit hatred (for Alabama), and I know hate is a strong word, but that's about what it is."

So, will Alex Golesh finally be the coach to break Alabama's six-year win streak and snatch a victory from the Tide in their house for the first time in 15 years?

He has the ingredients, from the wealth of wide receivers to the highly-touted quarterback Byrum Brown, but things always have the potential to go sideways in a new coach's first season on the Plains. Still, with Nick Saban out, Alabama has lost several games over the past few seasons and have proven that they are no longer the invincible team they once were.

Regardless of whether Golesh accomplishes the feat in his first season, it's clear he understands the importance of improving to the point of finally getting another Iron Bowl win.
