Alex Golesh gave the exact type of update you want for a freshman entering the summer regarding former Saraland star and Duke Blue Devils flip DeShawn Spencer. Golesh likes what he's seen in the slot during the Auburn Tigers' spring practice.
In particular, Golesh talked about the added size Spencer has put on from his time in the weight room since arriving at the Woltosz Football Performance Center during the annual First Light Community of Mobile Football Preview Dinner. Golesh also continuously praised Spencer for his smarts.
“He was a young man that was literally sitting on his official visit when I walked into the facility that Sunday, kind of with a big old grin on his face," Golesh said. "And all along through the recruiting, his whole deal and his family was, he wanted to be at Auburn. So he’s come in and been exactly what we thought. He’s really, really intelligent. He’s a really good football player. Like he did so much at Saraland that for him to just hone in at playing receiver and he’s really locked in on playing in the slot.
“He’s put some good weight on. He’s really smart, really tough, man. You talk about identity of Auburn football, that’s what you want. And he’s another guy that’s just honored to be there. I think as you’re building a foundation for a football program, that’s so big to have guys that genuinely want to be there. And he’s one of those guys.”
Spencer has a chance to steal snaps from Bryce Cain, who has yet to make an impact at receiver with the coach who recruited him over the past two years and may have less of a chance now with a new coach, and the transfer the aforementioned new coach brought over to compete, Christian Neptune. Neither Cain nor Neptune has much size, at 185 and 165, respectively, so Spencer could be a true standout if his work in the weight room continues. Obviously, the on-field component has to work with Byrum Brown and Co. in the quarterback room, but it all starts in the weight room.
Auburn must compete in the weight room and avoid being a punchline like Alabama
Ohio State Buckeyes DB and Nick Saban-era Alabama Crimson Tide commit Earl Little Jr. recently clowned UAT for an uncompetitive nature in their weight room compared to OSU. The moment a comment like that ever gets out from a former Auburn player is the day there will be some explaining to do on the Plains. Luckily, that isn't the reputation. Not under Golesh, at least.
"Fe" (f*** everybody) is a great motto for a Division I football team's weight room. Golesh's aggressive nature in practice figures to breed a conducive attitude for Tigers players in an Iron Palace. There seems to be competition in the weight room, with EDGE Jared Smith also bulking up this offseason.
Hopefully we see more follow in Smith's and Spencer's footsteps. There's no reason to think it won't at this rate.
