Alex McPherson's story is one of courage, strength and recovery. The Auburn kicker has returned almost to full strength following a string of illnesses that kept him out for nearly all of the 2024 season and has challenged him to get back on the field.
For how he has fought through it, McPherson has received the 2025 Pat Sullivan Impact Award, the Birmingham Monday Morning Quarterback Club announced on Tuesday.
“The Monday Morning Quarterback Club is honored to recognize Alex McPherson as this year’s recipient of the Pat Sullivan Impact Award,” Tommy Sisson, Monday Morning Quarterback Club Captain said. “This award honors Coach Sullivan’s exemplary character that he displayed through his integrity, courage, faith and kindness. All of these values ring true of Alex, even in the adversity that he has faced and overcome. His life is an inspiration to others. We congratulate Alex and wish him continued success and prosperity.”
McPherson was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis in April 2024, which caused him to drop more than 50 pounds. This past December, he underwent surgery to remove his large intestine, with a stoma put in place connected to an ostomy bag. The Fort Payne, Ala., native decided to have the bag put on the left side of his body, so he could continue kicking.
Another diagnosis, this time Crohn's disease, hit McPherson a few months later, causing him to drop 30 pounds, before a new treatment plan was ordered.
Now, the junior is back to kicking the ball through the uprights, making a career-long 49-yard in Auburn's win against Mercer on Saturday. McPherson is 18-of-21 on field goal attempts this season, while making all 33 extra point attempts.
According to the Auburn press release, the Pat Sullivan Impact Award is named in honor of Heisman Trophy winner Pat Sullivan. It recognizes individuals in the world of sports whose lives and career have positively impacted others. Recipients are known for their craft and for demonstrating character, leadership, service, perseverance, and teamwork.
