As soon as the ball came off the bat of Ethin Bingaman, you knew it was gone, and that the freshman had just hit his third home run of the game, this time a three-run dinger that finished off the weekend for Auburn against Arkansas as the Tigers run-ruled the Razorbacks 14-1 for the series win.
The crowd told you. The reaction from the dugout told you. The Voice of the Auburn Tigers, Andy Burcham’s commentary, told you. It was another massive win for a team that is hitting its stride at exactly the right time: as April turns into May and the postseason nears.
“A great response today,” Auburn coach Butch Thompson said. “This is a pretty big team win against Oklahoma, who arguably has the best culture I’ve seen that we’ve competed against. A good hard-fought weekend for us. I’m thankful we were able to bounce back from last night and win a series. We had to play good in all three phases today to have a chance to win the series.”
Auburn baseball has won four straight SEC series
The Tigers stand at 30-13, 12-9 in the SEC, college baseball’s toughest conference by a mile, and are in line to play host to another NCAA Regional and, hopefully, Super Regional.
But there is still work to be done, and that begins with yet another marquee showdown at Texas A&M this upcoming weekend. In the latest DI Baseball rankings, the Aggies sit at No. 7, while Thompson’s Tigers follow at No. 8. It doesn’t get easier after that, with a trip to Starkville to take on No. 10 Mississippi State in front of 15,000 Bulldog faithful set for the next weekend and then, to close up the regular season, a visit from SEC leader No. 5 Georgia.
It’s all part of the grind of playing an SEC baseball schedule. As Auburn Undercover’s Jason Caldwell reported on Monday, Auburn has played or will play 28 games against the current Top 20 teams in the country. If that doesn’t prepare you for the postseason, nothing will.
Now, Auburn needs to take the momentum from four straight SEC series wins and take it to another level in the next few weeks before postseason play begins. This team has the talent to make it to Omaha. Let’s see if they can achieve it.
