Rumors of Tahaad Pettiford's depature may have been greatly exaggerated. With the transfer portal now open, what was previously assumed to be a formality earlier during the regular season may not come to fruition for the Auburn Tigers.

Per Auburn Tigers On SI's Brooks Crew, an AU student journalist on the ground at 189 E University Dr., "Though it is far too early to say what Auburn’s lineup in the future will look like, it is clear that Steven Pearl has shown an ability to succeed even when presented with a nearly entirely unique roster, which bodes well for the future of the team in the modern era of the Transfer Portal."

Pettiford entering the portal was expected, and while it could still happen, there is positive momentum for the guard to return following his backcourt mate Kevin Overton's return to the program. Also announced on Tuesday was Filip Jovic's departure, though it's unclear if that will have a tangible impact on Pettiford's decision.

Auburn retaining the roster could affect Tahaad Pettiford's decision

As 247Sports' Nathan King notes, Pettiford is more likely to return if key pieces from the 2025-26 team are kept. King reports that he and Steven Pearl's coaching staff are meeting early in the transfer window to discuss his future.

"We've written here in the late stages of this season that, if Pettiford decides to transfer, that will be of his own accord. Auburn is not going to force him out unless his price is just driven up astronomically high. His connection with this current roster, which the Tigers are of course trying to retain, can't be understated, either. The more he learns about this group with another full offseason, the better chemistry this team can have," King wrote.

If Pearl can keep bringing players back, Pettiford could be convinced to continue his playing career on the Plains. The New Jersey native will probably have plenty of offers from around the country, with SEC schools likely interested in poaching Pearl's best player, Big East schools looking to offer a chance to return to his home region, and programs in practically every Power conferences offering big money to bring in the explosive combo guard.
