Spring practice ended earlier this month, and now the Auburn football coaching staff will spend the next few months focused on recruiting. The spring transfer portal window opened last week, and filling in a few gaps in the roster is at the top of the to-do list.

When asked about priorities in the spring transfer portal window, head coach Hugh Freeze mentioned the need for an experienced linebacker to add to the Tigers' young LB position group. With only one upperclassman in the position group, Robert Woodyard, the talented group is in need of solid experience. Over the weekend, the coaching staff got their guy.

Former Maryland linebacker Caleb Wheatland announced he would be transferring to Auburn for his final year of eligibility. The announcement comes after Wheatland spent the weekend on the Plains getting a closer look at the program.

A 3-star prospect out of high school, the Maryland native signed with the Terrapins as a member of their recruiting class of 2022. He played in 11 games as a true freshman and then ranked second on the team in sacks and tackles for loss as a sophomore. He was a starter as a junior during the 2024 season.

Over his career at Maryland, Wheatland recorded 100 tackles, 14.5 tackles for loss, 7.5 sacks and one fumble recovery. According to 247 Sports, he is the No. 288 overall player and the No. 9 linebacker currently in the transfer portal. The Tigers may or may not look to add another linebacker after the addition of Wheatland.
