The Auburn Tigers have confidence heading into the season, but with a ceiling. Few are expecting a national championship outside AU's locker room, where they're absolutely gunning for a title. While there's a large contingent expecting the Tigers to be on the level of the Arkansas Razorbacks, Mississippi State Bulldogs, and Kentucky Wildcats, there's also confidence in a win-now veteran roster with imported winning parts from Alex Golesh's USF Bulls and elsewhere via the transfer portal.
Most put Auburn as a six-win team as a floor and an eight-win team as a ceiling. The reason there's not more confidence is that the Tigers' October slate is projected to be a buzzsaw of biblical proportions. CBS Sports' Brad Crawford called the three-week stretch of the Georgia Bulldogs, LSU Tigers, and Ole Miss Rebels the country's fifth-toughest three-week stretch, and the SEC's third-toughest.
"Welcome to college football's most competitive league, Alex Golesh. Facing a complete roster on the road is challenging, especially in rivalry mode between the hedges. Playing in Athens means Auburn has to survive an elite defensive front and avoid getting dragged into a possession-by-possession grind where mistakes are magnified, especially at quarterback," Crawford wrote.
"Kiffin's arrival at Jordan-Hare Stadium will be rude for the visitors. LSU brings skill-position speed and offensive volatility that can turn a game in two drives, forcing Auburn to match explosiveness with a bevy of transfers. After that, Ole Miss and quarterback Trinidad Chambliss will stretch Auburn's defense horizontally and vertically. Three weeks, three completely different schematic challenges -- physicality, explosiveness, and tempo -- with no recovery window in between."
What's not even mentioned is the fact that the Tennessee Volunteers begin the month. While the quarterback situation could be unsettled, Josh Heupel may have also found himself a 5-star true freshman gem in Faizon Brandon. The Florida Gators and Iron Bowl in Tuscaloosa are the other two games that could give AU problems in-conference. Don't write off DJ Lagway making the Baylor Bears a more competitive outfit by the time the Tigers open up the season in Atlanta.
Auburn football is equipped to handle a tough 2026 schedule
This will be a tough schedule. There's no way around that fact. For all we know, QB Jared Curtis could get the chance to run the show for the Vanderbilt Commodores, and that game in late September will also be a challenge. We're looking at very few sure things outside of Arkansas, Mississippi State, the Southern Miss Golden Eagles, and the Samford Bulldogs.
Good thing Golesh and DJ Durkin have veterans and continuity on both sides of the ball.
With so many unknowns in the sport every year, there are a few generalized indicators that could help predict a smooth landing. Continuity is a big one, and the Tigers have as much of that as possible with a new head coach and an offensive depth chart at every position.
There will be bumps in the road this year, but maybe not as many as everyone thinks.
