Auburn football transfer can be named starter at Florida State before fall camp

Florida State Seminoles head coach Mike Norvell may be inclined to name Auburn Tigers transfer quarterback Ashton Daniels the new starting quarterback in Tallahassee before fall camp even begins. That's Chop Chat's Taylor Devers' read on the situation, anyway.

Per Devers, "To be honest, this was a waste of a post by Nakos regarding the competition. Ashton Daniels and Kevin Sperry were the only two options that could realistically be involved in a battle. If JUCO option Malachi Marshall could've enrolled this spring, then there could be a different story, but I wouldn't be surprised if Coach Norvell wanted to name Ashton Daniels the starter heading into the summer."

"The way I could see it, Sperry would have another year to develop and compete for the starting gig in 2027. Knowing how Coach Norvell operates with quarterbacks, I wouldn't be surprised if he brings in another signal-caller via the transfer portal to give Sperry and Marshall more competition in 2027," Devers added.

Thus far, Norvell has been complimentary, but vague on both QBs. He hasn't yet declared either a player starter-material, but Daniels holds the edge having come from Auburn with a few starts under his belt, and a better-looking offense under interim play-caller Derrick Nix than Jackson Arnold had been under Hugh Freeze's ill-fated three-headed play-calling machine.

Besides, Kevin Sperry represents a potential flight risk from FSU regardless of whether or not he gets the starting nod. Sperry was at three different high schools, two in the DFW metro and one in the Oklahoma City metro. He may grow restless if he can't find a shot and/or the product doesn't improve in the Sunshine State's capital city.

Truthfully, it doesn't look like it will in 2026 after Gus Malzahn retired in February. Norvell is a lame duck who's next on the chopping block across the College Football landscape if the Noles can't produce results.

Ashton Daniels an intriguing option to save Mike Norvell's FSU tenure

Sperry played in Texas' Class 6A, so he is no slouch. Still, Daniels has experience starting on the Plains and from his days with the Stanford Cardinal. He raises Florida State's floor, and that's all Norvell needs right now to save his job.

In that sense, Daniels is perfect for the Noles right now. All he needs to do is bridge the gap to 2027, when a suddenly patient Sperry or another option takes over and continues trying to keep Norvell from getting the axe.
