Auburn coaches, players and fans spent a lot of late nights at Plainsman Park this weekend as the Tigers won four straight games to win the NCAA Regional, concluding with an 8-3 victory over Milwaukee on Monday night.
There will be at least two more night games at the place on the corner of Heisman and Donahue, as No. 4 Auburn is set to host Ole Miss in the NCAA Super Regional starting on Friday at 7 p.m. CT. The Tigers and Rebels will meet again at 4 p.m. CT on Saturday, and if a rubber game is necessary, the two teams will battle on Sunday, with the time of the game to be determined.
Butch Thompson’s squad fought back after losing the first game of the regional to Milwaukee on Friday, falling behind as much as 10-0 in the opener before falling 13-8. A 17-13 slugfest win over NC State helped the Tigers fight off elimination on Saturday before Auburn had to pull out two wins on Sunday, first against UCF and then against the Panthers, with the latter game lasting until 1 a.m. local time.
Auburn was unbeatable in night games during the NCAA Regional
In the win-or-go-home game on Monday night, one that was delayed by four hours due to weather, Auburn jumped out to a 2-0 lead before a two-run dinger by Milwaukee tied it up in the top of the fourth. Chase Fralick, the MVP of the Auburn Regional, gave the Tigers the lead with a lead-off homer over the centerfield wall to start the bottom of the 6th. Auburn would put four more runs on the board in the frame to take a 7-2 lead, and Jackson Sanders would do the rest, allowing just one run on three hits over the last five innings to clinch the victory.
Ole Miss went a perfect 3-0 in the Nebraska Regional, starting with a 7-6 win in 14 innings over Arizona State. The Rebels then took down the host Cornhuskers 6-3 before defeating the Sun Devils 5-4 in 10 innings to advance to the Super Regional.
The two teams did not meet this regular season.Â
