Auburn (25-11, 8-7 SEC) sits right in the middle of a tight SEC standings race and will stick with its weekend rotation of Andreas Alvarez, Jake Marciano, and Alex Petrovic.
“The rest of the year, I’m trying to sell to our guys that it’s an unbelievable opportunity, and it’s all about us playing ball,” head coach Butch Thompson said. “We’ve been through a lot – the good, the bad, the ugly, and everywhere in between – and we’ve learned a ton of lessons with our ballclub. This is just an awesome part of something they’ve earned, and they got to go play at some great places and play some amazing teams. We want to consider ourselves one of those types of teams, too. It’s time to just go play ball. It’s time to turn it loose, learn some lessons and function collectively as a group.”
Alvarez has been a key boost since moving into the weekend rotation, picking up two wins while striking out 15 over his first 12 innings as a starter. Marciano enters the weekend with a strong 1.88 ERA despite a rough outing against Kentucky last time out. Petrovic has been steady in big moments, winning his last two series-clinching starts against Arkansas and Kentucky.
Top-10 matchup in Gainesville
Florida (27-11, 9-6 SEC) comes in playing solid baseball and has been especially tough at home in recent years against Auburn. The Gators have won seven of the last 10 meetings between the two teams and have taken four straight home series in the matchup, including postseason success in Gainesville. That history adds another layer to an already important SEC showdown.
The Gators are balanced on both sides, with a lineup led by Brendan Lawson and Ethan Surowiec and a pitching staff that ranks among the best in the country in strikeouts and overall production.
Auburn counters with one of the strongest pitching staffs in the nation, leading college baseball in strikeout-to-walk ratio while doing an elite job of limiting walks. That strength on the mound has been the foundation of their season, especially in SEC play.
Out of the bullpen, Jackson Sanders remains a reliable late-inning option after strong relief work earlier in SEC play.
Offensively, the Tigers have started to find more consistency, hitting over .300 in recent games and showing more power at the plate over the last couple of weeks. If that continues, it gives Auburn a real chance to keep climbing in a crowded conference race.
It’s a big early test in the second half of SEC play, with both teams fighting for positioning in a packed standings race. First pitch is tonight at 6 p.m. CT in Gainesville.
