The College Football Playoff Selection Committee predictably delivered a reason for everyone to complain after naming the final 12 teams in competition for the sport's ultimate crown.
Some felt the Alabama Crimson Tide's making it over the Notre Dame was an outrage after the former was embarrassed by the Georgia Bulldogs, 28-7, in the SEC Championship Game from Mercedes-Benz Stadium on Saturday afternoon.
On3's Justin Hokanson complained that Group of 5 teams like the American Conference champion Tulane Green Wave and Sun Belt champion James Madison Dukes were included in the 12-team field at all.
"But sorry, there is no world Tulane and JMU should be in a credible playoff over Notre Dame, BYU, Vanderbilt or Texas, to be honest," Hokanson wrote.
The Fighting Irish and BYU Cougars are probably the only teams with legitimate gripes. BYU was punished in a way Alabama wasn't after playing what basically amounted to a Texas Tech Red Raiders home game during the Big 12 Championship Game from Jerry World in Arlington.
As for the Vanderbilt Commodores, they lacked signature wins. The Texas Longhorns were a Florida Gators result going the other way away from a berth, but that result cannot be ignored. Especially because the close Ohio State Buckeyes loss is negated by OSU's close loss to the Indiana Hoosiers in the Big Ten Championship Game.
Hokanson definitely reveals the agenda in saying, "Alabama at Oklahoma and Miami at Texas A&M will be phenomenal atmospheres. This should be a fun playoff." It's all about the brands. Tulane and JMU have no clout in the College Football world due to their G5 status.
And that's just not the spirit of a major college sports tournament. March Madness Cinderella's would like a word.
The chance of Green Wave or Dukes upsetting a Power 4 program on their home field is reason enough for the sport to make a stand and let the world know that those weekday G5 regular season games have consequences.
