For some reason, Jimbo Fisher keeps appearing on hot boards for the Auburn Tigers' recently vacated head coaching position. Of course, Hugh Freeze's firing this past Sunday afternoon followed a 10-3 loss to the Kentucky Wildcats on Saturday night at Jordan-Hare Stadium.
Freeze's firing was proof that hiring guys who weren't that successful at other SEC schools is a bad idea. Naturally, national media figure AU should hire Fisher after going 27-21 in the SEC during his time coaching the TAMU Aggies.
Mike Farrell Sports' Mark Pszonak believes Auburn should break that cycle this time around, before boosters JABA themselves too hard and end up bringing on the 60-year-old.
"Some programs have a special talent for shooting themselves in the foot. Arguably, Auburn may already be in this category, but if they aren’t, hiring Jimbo Fisher as their next head coach would solidify their position," Pszonak wrote.
"Hopefully for the sake of Auburn fans, lets all hope this is just a crazy internet rumor. But if there are boosters pushing this agenda, the decision makers at the school need to quickly snuff this out.
"The inmates can’t successfully run the asylum, no matter how much they donate, which is what college football has become."
Auburn AD John Cohen has claimed that the coaching search will be on him, not any high-paying donor.
“I am the committee,” Cohen said. “Even though I will listen, and I will do as good a job as I possibly can of taking in information, I will be the committee.
“I know that I owe this to the fan base. I grew up in the state of Alabama. I know how special this fan base is. I wake up every morning saying, ‘We’ve got to get this done.’ We’ve got to get it done for people who are at the top of the upper deck, the people who are in our suites, the people who are on the field.”
Good on Cohen. That's what he needs to say after how the Freeze era went.
Now, what he needs to do, is not hire Fisher or anyone of that ilk.
