The fine print in Bruce Pearl's contract to be the Special Assistant to the Athletic Director indicates that he's still playing a role in his son Steven's Auburn Tigers basketball program. Bruce isn't collecting $150,000 a year to be a cheerleader.

In fact, Pearl is getting a lot more than $150,000. And from the looks of it, though he stepped aside and handed the program over to Steven, he didn't fully cede recruiting responsibilities, per the somewhat vague language in his contract.

Per AL.com's Peter Rauterkus, "Pearl’s contract in his new role is for six years and is set to pay him $150,000 annually, according to a copy of the contract obtained by AL.com. Pearl will also receive benefits such as a university-provided automobile, two premium seats for each home football game and full access and all monthly dues paid for either the Auburn University Club, Moore’s Mill Club or an annual $3,000 allowance toward a club of Pearl’s choosing in the greater Auburn area ... Pearl will report to athletic director John Cohen. His obligations will include fundraising, promotional, public relations, recruitment, and 'other activities benefiting the University as determined, directed and approved by the Athletics Director,' the contract reads."

Bruce Pearl likely still instrumental in landing key players

Steven is the one putting together game plans, dealing with personnel, and running the day-to-day. It's Steven's program now. But knowing Bruce is still part of recruiting efforts, and it's easy to see the impact he's had on the 2026-27 roster.

Remember, he put together the 2025-26 roster and left right before the regular season. Every returner from that roster, including Kevin Overton and Simon Walker, likely had Bruce persuading them just as hard as Steven. Tahaad Pettiford choosing to return for two straight offseasons definitely had to do with the vision Bruce sold him way back in 2023.

Bruce publicly vouched for Auburn to make March Madness during his screen time on TNT. It's obvious that he's still bleeding orange and blue. Now we know, to an extent, the official capacity in which he's able to show that with some of his contract details now public.
