ESPN College Gameday has become a very polarizing topic in the college football world, especially since the introduction and constant promotion of Pat McAfee and the sendoff of the legendary Lee Corso. Still, there is an extra juice in the air when the show comes to your campus. It means the eyes of the college football world are upon you, and it means you've got the best and most important game of the week.
Unfortunately, Auburn hasn't hosted a game of that magnitude since the 2017 Iron Bowl. That is, of course, a bittersweet memory for Tiger fans. After beating top-ranked Georgia two weeks prior, Auburn knocked off the new No. 1, beating Alabama 26-14, with Gameday and guest picker Charles Barkley getting the day started on the Plains. The Tigers would lose an SEC Championship Game rematch with Georgia and be left out of the College Football Playoff, a disappointing but not unpredictable choice from the college football establishment.
Since then, Auburn has been featured on Gameday, but that has been for either road games or neutral site affairs. In 2019 the Tigers were in Arlington for a non-conference showdown with Oregon, and Gameday went to Gainesville that same season for a renewal of the Gators-Tigers matchup.
2021 was the last year that the Auburn helmet was seen on the Gameday set. That was when the Tigers went to Happy Valley for a whiteout game with Penn State. The head coach at the time was Bryan Harsin, and this was when the dark days of Auburn football really began.
Can Auburn return to the national stage?
Gameday has already chosen its first two destinations for 2026. Week 1 will see the show eminate from Baton Rouge for LSU vs Clemson, and while the quality of this Clemson team is in question, the intrigue of Lane Kiffin's debut in purple and gold is too high. In Week 2, the crew will be in Austin for Ohio State vs Texas. It's tough to argue with those two choices.

From there on out, it becomes a question of how the schedule stacks up. Let's look at Auburn's home dates in 2026, and see just how likely a Gameday return is.
Week 3: vs Florida
Auburn and Florida could both come in 2-0, but two new head coaches likely won't have built up enough momentum to garner a Gameday appearance. Plus, that's the same day Lane goes back to Ole Miss. Even Auburn fans can concede, that will be Week 3's main event.
Week 4: vs Vanderbilt
Without Diego Pavia, the Commodores don't quite have the virality that ESPN loves to cling to. This could be a really solid game, and there's a good chance both teams are 3-0 coming into this one. However, we'll still be in the part of the year where we get lots of undefeated vs undefeated matchups. If Lanoris Sellers and South Carolina are going into Tuscaloosa in the same situation, I'd expect Gameday to choose the Gamecocks and the Tide. Also, if Auburn drops the Florida game, then Week 4 will feature the Gators against Ole Miss and Trinidad Chambliss.
Week 8: vs LSU
With all the storylines surrounding LSU's early schedule, it would surprise me if Gameday hadn't already been to multiple games by now. This is a fairly slim week, though. Other potential choices include Ole Miss @ Texas, Texas A&M @ Alabama, and Indiana @ Michigan. (Although with the advent of Fox's Big Noon Kickoff, ESPN and Gameday have shied away from the Big Ten conference.)
Week 10: vs Arkansas
It would take a miracle for both Auburn and Arkansas to be good enough to warrant a Gameday visit. Especially in a week that includes BYU @ Utah, Georgia @ Ole Miss, and Oregon @ Ohio State.
Week 12: vs Samford
This ain't happening.
For Auburn, there are three realistic shots at hosting Gameday. If I had to put my money on one, it would be that Week 8 matchup with LSU. ESPN is not afraid of beating a story into the ground, and if LSU is having a strong season and Auburn has pulled off an upset over either Tennessee or Georgia in the two weeks prior, we could see the return of Rece, Herbie, and the rest of the crew in East Central Alabama.
