Last weekend, a former Auburn football player went viral for a play made in the United Football League, or UFL. Offensive lineman Gunner Britton lined up on the field for the DC Defenders late in the fourth quarter, appearing to be an extra blocker.
But when the ball was snapped on fourth-and-goal at the San Antonio Brahmas' two-yard line, Britton ended up in the back of the endzone and pulled down a pass with 1:55 left to play in the game. The Defenders ultimately won the matchup 32-34 after the OL's touchdown catch.
“It was something we kind of had in the game plan,” Britton said during an appearance this week on the “UFL Podcast" per AL.com. “When we do our heavy package of two (extra) offensive linemen, it’s pretty easy that most teams think you’re going to run it every time, so I kind of knew we had a play in if we saw they were going to play heavy into the run. …
“We always say: The play doesn’t care who makes it. So it was just kind of one of those mindsets where it’s ‘Hey, it’s my time. It’s my number that’s being called, so I just got to go execute like everybody else.’”
Britton spent one year on the Plains after transferring in ahead of the 2023 season. He earned a starting role and won multiple honors throughout the year for his efforts. Before his time with Auburn football, Britton spent five seasons with the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers.
