Auburn football's QB competition might not be as set in stone as previously thought ahead of the 2025 season.
According to Locked On Auburn's Lindsay Crosby, Deuce Knight can compete in spring and fall camps if Jackson Arnold doesn't solidify his role as the starter.
"Just all of the football stuff that they’re trying to do like everything that we heard is the QB specific stuff," Crosby said, per Essentially Sports.
“They’re working on the different drills all the different things… a little bit off base if I say there legitimately could be a like a legit quarterback competition in Spring and in fall like obviously Jackson Arnold’s the favorite but there is a world where Deuce Knight just looks fantastic and gets into the conversation.”
Thus far, there's been no indication Arnold is off pace to be Auburn's QB1 this fall. Hugh Freeze has been highly complimentary of his expected impact transfer portal addition, noting his confidence the Tigers can restore the confidence Arnold lost at Oklahoma.
“If you go back to his high school days, you don’t get to become the Gatorade Player of the Year without a great skill set,” Freeze said, per AL.com. “And when I see the way he functions with the fundamentals of that position with what we want to do. It’s a pretty natural fit.
“We can restore whatever confidence he may have lost for whatever reasons. It’s not for me to say.
“Our receivers are like, ‘this is different.’ This ball is, it’s spinning the right way."
Still, landing Knight was equally important for the program. If not more so. Seeing him steal the spotlight wouldn't be earth-shatteringly shocking, especially considering the shaky results from Arnold his freshman season in Norman.
There's a lot of time between now and AU's August 30 matchup against Baylor in Waco. Expect both QBs to trade the narrative lead between now and then -- with A-Day likely changing many minds on April 12.
