Deuce Knight may still have a chance to be Rebs' QB1 if NCAA balks at Trinidad ruling

Trinidad Chambliss is seemingly on his way back to the Ole Miss Rebels after having a University of Mississippi alum who took on his eligibility ruling predictably grant the quarterback an extra season and a retroactive redshirt from his days with the Ferris State Bulldogs.

That has Auburn Tigers transfer Deuce Knight potentially facing a second season of sitting on the bench as a more experienced signal-caller starts over him. College Football News' Pete Fiutak suggested Chambliss may not be out of the woods yet, and Knight may still get the chance to become QB1 in Oxford, Mississippi.

"As of this immediate moment, Trinidad Chambliss is back, but if the NCAA has something to say about it, Deuce Knight (Auburn) is hardly a bad option to work around," Fiutak wrote.

At this point, things would get ugly in the Magnolia State if Chambliss isn't granted an extra year.

Ole Miss fans just saw the Tennessee Volunteers bring back seventh-year QB Joey Aguilar after defeating the NCAA in court. Not getting Chambliss back would make them feel like victims of the NCAA's unpredictable and unfair system in that context.

Deuce Knight can unenroll from Ole Miss and sign elsewhere

Slap The Sign's Oliver Vandervoort noted that Knight can attempt to find a workaround in his contract with the Rebels, though stressed that the legal language of his deal will probably keep him from attempting that.

"The question now is just what the former Notre Dame commit can do about it? The transfer portal has been closed for a long time now. There's no spring portal anymore. He could do his own end-around and withdraw from Ole Miss and enroll elsewhere, but that's hardly the best decision, especially since he's likely signed contracts with and at his new school," Vandervoort wrote.

At some point, Ole Miss will take the field and will need someone to lead the charge. Pete Golding has already stepped in it by recruiting one of the highest-ceiling gunslingers available in Knight and delivering a false promise.

Golding better hope that if the Chambliss ruling changes, the damage isn't already done with Knight.
