After playing in all 12 games for Auburn football as a true freshman, keeping linebacker Elijah Melendez on the Plains throughout the head coaching transition was a major win for defensive coordinator DJ Durkin.
Melendez racked up 29 tackles, a sack, two interceptions and a touchdown last season, and was named to the 2025 SEC All-Freshman Team. After being named a team captain for the season opener as a sophomore, he's taking a step up in terms of his performance on the field and, according to Durkin, his leadership off the field.
"Elijah's been tremendous for these two weeks," Durkin said. "Obviously you see him, he's making a lot of plays, he's making physical plays, he's all over the field. It doesn't matter what spot he's in, if he's in coverage or we're blitzing him or he's fitting the run, he shows up. But I think that's just scratching the surface of what he does for our team and our defense because he's our vocal leader. He's out there getting everyone lined up, he's the communication piece for us from the sideline to him to the rest of the defense, and he's really embraced that role of being a vocal leader and getting guys in the right spots. And he's doing it off the field now, too, so he's been tremendous for us."
In his first two games of the 2026 season, Melendez has already recorded 18 tackles and a sack along with three pass deflections. After the season opener against Baylor, Melendez was asked about taking a step up as a sophomore.
"I would say taking that step really came with being confident in my process and just doing the right things off the field and on the field and trying to be a better person," he said, per Yahoo Sports. "I feel like that's what helped the most."
Head coach Alex Golesh said early on in the season that he would continue to push Melendez to become a vocal leader rather than only leading by example, and clearly the sophomore is coming into his own under the guidance of Golesh and Durkin.
The Tigers will return to action this Saturday when the host the Florida Gators at Jordan-Hare Stadium for a primetime kickoff at 6 p.m. Central Time. It will be the first time the Gators have played at Jordan-Hare since 2011, and the first matchup between the two teams since 2019.
