Auburn football's Pro Day saw a standout performance from Wesley Steiner, who transferred to Wazzu following the conclusion of the 2023 season but partook in the event as one of Hugh Freeze's former players.
AL.com's Peter Rauterkus relayed Steiner's domination across multiple drills.
"After spending his final college season away from Auburn, Steiner had arguably the best performance out of all of Monday participants," Rauterkus wrote.
"He was back on the Plains after transferring following the 2023 season, spending 2024 with Washington State. Steiner’s athleticism was on display from when he first arrived on Monday.
"He had the best vertical, broad jump and 40-yard dash among the players that participated and the third-most reps on the bench press."
Steiner's performance shows how much potential he had. For Steiner, knowing where to be on the field was a far greater concern than any motivational concern. While you can sharpen iron, you cannot substitute grasping schemes. Under two different defensive coordinators and head coaches, Steiner had those issues. He saw sporadic snaps in Pullman because of them.
Things didn't click under Ron Roberts for Steiner like they did under Jeff Schmedding. Steiner had 46 tackles in 2022 and never lived up to that potential again.
Still, Jake Dickert saw it.
The ex-Cougars coach and current Wake Forest headman raved about Steiner last July, claiming he was one of the "freakiest" athletes he had ever seen.
“Wes has proven throughout this summer to be one of the freakiest athletes I’ve ever seen,” Dickert said. “He power-cleaned from the floor 405 pounds. It’s just incredible. Coach Ben (Iannacchione) has never seen it. He’s fast. He’s agile. I’m excited to see it translate out on the field.”
The important thing now is an NFL scout seeing what Dickert saw. There will certainly be more eyes on Steiner after his performance at Auburn's Pro Day.
