Amaris Williams won't suit up for the Georgia Bulldogs during the 2026 College Football season. The former Class of 2024 5-star Auburn Tigers EDGE commit out of Clinton, North Carolina, suffered a season-ending injury before the end of spring practice on Wednesday.
Per Dawgs Central's Graham Coffey, "Georgia’s defense got some bad news on Wednesday, as one of the program’s biggest portal acquisitions won’t be available this fall. Multiple sources have told DawgsCentral that OLB Amaris Williams is out for the 2026 season after tearing his ACL during Tuesday’s practice. The injury came towards the end of the practice, with Williams trying to work on a pass rush move in a non-contact situation. The knee buckled under Williams, and further diagnosis revealed the torn ACL. The expected recovery timeline for Williams is 9-12 months, which would mean he will not play for Georgia in 2026."
Georgia's pass rush was reliant on Williams' emergence during his second season in the SEC, making this injury somewhat catastrophic for the Dawgs. With no April portal window to find a replacement, which, last year, was the 16-25, Kirby Smart, Tray Scott, and Glenn Schumann will have to speed up the development of Chase Linton, who's already having a big spring, and other diamonds in the rough on the edge.
Kirby Smart's UGA machine will have to kick into overdrive after Amaris Williams injury
The beauty of having a head coach like Smart is knowing that there are guys up and down the depth chart who made financial sacrifices to get on the field at Sanford Stadium and rep the Block "G" Between the Hedges.
Smart is a bargain hunter in an era of ostentatious NIL/rev-share spending, but he also sends guys to the NFL en masse, particularly on the defensive side of the ball, his forte. He'll need to rely on his depth to fill the gap.
The EDGE/outside linebacker spot is one that Smart has focused heavily on to fit guys into Schumann's hybrid 4-3/3-4 defense. Versatility is necessary, and many elite athletes signed on to allow Smart and Co. to find them a spot in the Dawgs' vaunted defense.
Williams had the strength and speed to improve against the run and be a strong contributor across the board. That will need to wait another year as the machine looks to churn out a respectable replacement on the edge.
