Former Auburn player Eugene Asante isn't happy to see Hugh Freeze get fired. The Cleveland Browns linebacker is also upset with the lack of accountability in the Tigers' locker room.
Asante, who played with Auburn from 2022-2024, put out a blistering statement on X (fka Twitter)that didn't so much defend Freeze as it did question the character of the players that he believes don't seem to care that Freeze got dismissed.
and that’s the bottom line. 💯 pic.twitter.com/1Q8VV6FFlq

Asante wonders where the passion is
At times, it's been safe to question how passionate the Auburn players were about winning. The effort has generally seemed to be there, but the inability to execute in clutch situations, the late-game meltdowns and sometimes questionable circumstances (see Georgia). Seven of Auburn's past 12 losses have been by one score and four of five losses this season were determined by a touchdown or less. Auburn has been in nearly every game, but the Tigers cannot get over the finish line.
Does that come down to passion or coaching? Have the Tigers been in the right position to succeed and just failed at the moment or have the coaches put them in a position to fail? These are questions worth asking.
One area of Asante's statement is interesting
While the linebacker was questioning the current players' commitment to the program, he was also pointing fingers.
"Because, honestly, I saw a team (offense primarily) for four quarters get embarrassed"
It's never surprising for one side of the ball to point fingers at the other, especially when the offense struggled like it did this season and especially on Saturday with just three points against lowly Kentucky. But it also speaks to some team chemistry. Samuel is not far removed from the Auburn program. He was a captain on the team last year. It's safe to wonder if there are some team chemistry issues that have boiled over from year to year under Freeze.
And Freeze's inability to figure out the quarterback position has definitely played into that. Maybe Samuel, in criticizing this Auburn team, is revealing more reasons why Freeeze got fired.
